The name probably derives from Latin QUADRIVIUM, which means a place where four roads branch. Today, there are only three roads that lead to beautiful natural landscapes, vineyards, meadows and wooded hills. West of Karojba there is a field (Kapitelsko polje) with numerous cultural, historical and natural monuments. An unavoidable point on arrival in Karojba is a beautiful canyon of the brook Krvar that flows into the river Mirna not far away. The legend says that near this creek a conflict between Istrian people and Attila took place, the creek was filled with blood and therefore its name (krv= blood). Nearby there are three springs Badavca, Valigaštar and Knež Studenac which still offer refreshment to the passers. Every year, near the source of Badavca, there is a meeting of the Istrian writers who gather to read their works here. The round Krast valley Sopajac is the largest in Istria and the whole field is a habitat of two hundred bird species.
Karojba is known for its rich gastronomic offer. Following old recipe’s maneštre are made, thick soups with plenty of vegetables and sometimes with an addition of dry meat products, also prepared using the ancient grandfathers’ recipe. Inevitable are various types of homemade pasta such as fuži, gnocchi, pasutice, ravioli, prepared with the game but also with wild asparagus picked and prepared in the spring. Autumn delights are in the sign of the king of mushrooms, the truffle. The mild climate and gray clay soil provide ideal conditions for its growth. Along with its good food, Karojba offers wines from the vineyards of central Istria. Malvasia, Teran and Cabernet Sauvignon are especially recommended.
Karojba and its surroundings are witnesses to rich history. The oldest finds date back to the Neolithic era. Among other things in the site, Šublenta flint blades and stone axes were discovered. At the beginning of the 2nd century, before the new era, fortifications were built on the hilltop - mostly circular villages with defensive walls. In the area of Karojba and its surrounding, ruins of fortifications were also found, the most impressive remains from the Bronze Age. Roman government in this area left some valuable traces. In the site Podšublenta, a channel for irrigation of the fields in the Roman period was discovered as evidence of a developed agriculture in ancient times. In Karojba, Roman funerary monuments were found, such as a tombstone of the 4th Roman legion of Flavius Felix from the first half of the 4th century. The immigration of the Slavs in this area can certainly be placed in the 7th century. The largest number of immigrants arrived in late 8th century during the Frankish state, which led them as serfs to Istria. In this area traces were left even from the Uskok’s war between Venice and Austria, in the early 17th century, in the form of looting, destruction, devastation of the harvest ... The rise of Karojba began in the 18th century, during the Austrian monarchy. The first school was built in that period, the social and cultural life was visibly improved and better transportation solutions resulted in the general progress of the village.
